In diabetes there is decreased in action of insulin in the human body. Glucagon and the insulin control the glucose level in the blood. As the insulin action decreases, the glucagon action increases. Therefore, the body depends on the external source of insulin. It is well absorbed by the subcutaneous administration.

It is rapid- acting insulin prescribed in the adults with type-2 diabetes and in the children with type-1 diabetes. Generally it is prescribed to improve the blood glucose control in the diabetic patients. It is administered subcutaneously through the pre-filled pen injection. It is generally used along with the long-acting insulin. It is administered either before 15 minutes of meal taking or after 20 minutes of the meal taking. It also can be infused subcutaneously by external insulin infusion pump.

Side effects

All the side effects of the drugs are the extension of their pharmacological actions. As it reduces the blood glucose level, just opposite to the action of the glucagon hormone, it produces hypoglycemic effects in the human body, which may be lethal to the brain. Lipodystrophy is seen after a prolonged use at the single anatomical region. Irritation can be felt in the site of the administration.

It should not be used in the condition like hypoglycemia as it may exclude lethal effects on the body. If the patient is allergic to the insulin or towards any ingredients of this preparation then the patient should not be injected with insulin.

It is stored in the temperature below 15 degree Celsius in the refrigerator. It should not be exposed to the direct sunlight. It should be kept away from the reach of the children and the pets.

It is composed of the Insulin Glulisine extracted from the recombinant technology. The strength in which it is available is 100 IU of the glulisine in one ml of the solution and the total volume of the solution is 3 ml. This means that the total concentration of the insulin formulation is only 300 IU.

Important Precautions

Before using this drug the expired date should be seen properly. The blood glucose level should be tested before the administration of this insulin in order to rule out the hypoglycemia. As the insulin absorption varies according to the changes in the exercise, environmental temperature and diet, the dose should be regulated as per the conditions. The concern physician should know all about other diseases like renal, cardiac, metabolic and hepatic problems of the particular patient.

Dosage and administration

It is administered subcutaneously in the diabetic patients over the arm or thigh or at buttocks. Either it can be administered 15 minutes before the meal taking or after the 20 minutes of meal in taking. It should not used in the insulin pump along with other insulin. Some patients who are habituated to self injection can also try and go through the process of injecting by them. In order to self inject, the drug will be able to reduce the sugar level effectively.
