Details

Introduction

This drug exemestane belongs to the group of aromatase inhibitors which are used for the inhibition of formation of estrogen in the breast tissues. Due to the inhibition of the enzyme, the drug helps in reducing the size of the drug that is dependent on estrogen for its growth. In post menopausal women, it is helpful in preventing the growth of carcinoma.

Use

Exemestane being an aromatase inhibitor is used in cases of breast cancer which is in early stages of tumor and is not responding to tamoxifen. It is also given to females who have had surgery for breast cancer and need to remove the remaining tumor cells. These are places where the hormone estrogen is taking up more effect and letting the cancer cells to grow. When an oral anticancer therapy is to be taken for 5 years, this drug can be changed with tamoxifen or when tamoxifen is not responding.

Side effects

Minor or less serious side effects of the drug include symptoms like headaches, hot flushes, joint pain, anxiety, stomach upset, abdominal pain, and insomnia. Depression or such psychiatric symptoms should be told to the doctor as these are also seen when this drug is given. Sometimes also cardiac ischemia events are seen so that the patient suffers from angina pain. Increased appetite, increased sweating, nausea, and fatigue are also seen. If given along with other drugs containing estrogen or estrogen inhibitors, then there might be additional side effects.

Contraindication

Drug should not be taken in case of hypersensitivity to exemestane or any other ingredient in the tablet. In case of pregnancy or breast feeding mothers, the drug is contraindicated. The tests on paediatric age group is not been done and its mutagenic and carcinogenic potential has not yet been established.

storage

The 25 mg tablets should be ideally stored at 25 deg C and can be within a range of 15-30 deg C, away from the reach of children.

Aromasin is a tablet that contains 25 mg of exemestane compound along with other substances for the binding and preservative actions such as cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol and few others.

Important Precautions

The drug should not be administered along with other agents which resemble estrogen effect or contain estrogen. Since there is not enough data about the safety in children and about its mutagenic potential, the drug should be stopped in females who become pregnant and it should be reported to the doctor. Bone mineral density reduction requires the drug to be stopped. The prescribing doctor should be told about any other drug that is being simultaneously taken, so that the drug interactions can be properly judged before giving exemestane. New bone pain or vision problems should be immediately reported.
