Interferon B-1b has been a very useful and frequently used non-specific immunosuppressant drug for use in various immunological conditions. It may be human based or recombinant form so that it can be injected into the patients in conditions like multiple sclerosis which can be stopped from progressing further. Interferon can be produced recombinantly from E.coli or from human fibroblasts. The anti-inflammatory effects of this drug help in the betterment of the multiple sclerosis patients, which can also have a strengthening affect on the blood brain barrier. The drug definitely delays the progression of the MS into a fully fledged disease.


Recombinant interferon B-1b is a drug that can help in slowing the progression of the multiple sclerosis attack by inhibiting the inflammation of the nerve sheaths. Therefore, it is one of the important drugs when the symptoms of MS are just starting for the first time. Even for recurrent attacks of this disease, the drug can be given by injection. Relapsing multiple sclerosis and secondary progressive multiple sclerosis along with active disease can be treated with the help of this drug. The basic purpose of the use is to improve the central nervous symptoms which bring the most trouble to the patient.

Side effects

Injection site reactions are common where there might be inflammation, swelling, location necrotising lesions, etc. Flu like symptoms are found after injecting the drug which includes fever, chills, malaise, joint pains, etc. neutropenia, shortness of breath, runny nose, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, etc are seen. Suicidal tendencies have been seen with the use of the drug.


The contraindications for the use of interferon B-1b are features such as pregnancy, allergy to interferon, there are suicidal ideations and psychiatric manifestations and if there is pre-existing liver disease.


The vial should not be kept at temperatures above 25 degree centigrade or at freezing points. Drug should not be used after the expiry date that is mentioned in the pack and the injection vial pack should be kept out of the reach of children.


The drug is available in form of a powder in the vial which is reconstituted before injection. For reconstitution, a prefilled syringe is provided containing 1.2 ml sodium chloride solution of strength 5.4 mg/ml. The vial contains powder for making 3 ml of solution which means 900 microgram of recombinant interferon B-1b is present in the vial. This has to be mixed with the provided solution to make it up to 3 ml. There are 15 such vials in the packing.

Important Precautions

Doctor should be immediately contacted if there are allergic reactions in form of itching, swelling of the face or skin on other body parts, loss of appetite or vomiting or nausea. If the patient is using other medications, it should be told to the doctor. Pregnant females or breast feeding females should tell about their conditions. Driving and doing actions where precision is required should not be done after taking the drug.

Dosage and administration

The dose of interferon is 1 ml on every alternate day but the start should be done with lower volumes such as 0.25 ml every alternate day and increase by 0.25 ml after every 3 injections so that the 1 ml dose can be started from the 19th day onwards. Before injecting the drug subcutaneously, the recombinant powder has to be reconstituted with the provided sodium chloride solution in the blister pack.
