Introduction

Valsartan hydrochlorothiazide is the generic name of Cotareg. It belongs to the group of angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It primarily works by means of keeping the blood vessels narrow does promoting proper blood flow and enhancing normalization of blood pressures.


Use

This drug is primarily use to treat high blood pressure or hypertension. It can be use as a mono therapy or in combination with other drugs for a synergistic effect.


Side effects

Commonly reported side effects of the drugs are dizziness, headache, vertigo, easy fatigability, drying of the mouth, diarrhea, and nausea with or without vomiting, joint pain, muscle pain, loss of appetite, and back pain. Consult your health care provider immediately for any signs and symptoms of worsening side effects.


Contraindication

This drug should never be given to patient with extreme sensitivity reaction to Cotareg and any of its mentioned ingredients. This medication should also not to be given to patient who has anuria or sensitivity to any of the derivative of sulfonamide due to presence of hydrochlorothiazide in Cotareg.

Composition

Valsartan hydrochlorothiazide is the generic name of Cotareg. It is the main component of the drug Cotareg which is responsible for the therapeutic effect of the medication. It is a powder form substance. Inactive compositions of the drugs are titanium dioxide, crospovidone, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicon, and iron oxides.


Important Precautions

Proper dosing should be followed in giving Cotareg drug. Be watchful for signs and symptoms of overdosage. Do not also drink alcoholic beverages while undergoing Cotareg drug therapy. Avoid taking supplements that contains potassium or other forms of supplements. Inform your health care provider immediately if you are taking any medication other than Cotareg. Avoid quick change in position such as from lying to sitting, or standing. This is to prevent orthopnea and dizziness which is the main side effects of Cotareg. This is not to take by pregnant as well as lactating mothers. Study showed that taking Cotareg during pregnancy can cause fetal anomalies. It can also be excreted to human milk, does; it is also not to take by breastfeeding mothers. Extra care is given to pediatric as well as geriatric patient who is undergoing Cotareg therapy.


Dosage and administration

Cotareg tablet is taken via oral route. The dosage requirement will depend on the overall condition of the patient as predetermined by health care provider. The usual dosing is 160 mg 320 mg/12.5 mg 25 mg. the Cotareg tablet can be taken in full or empty stomach. It is important to follow doctor's prescription religiously. For the treatment of CHF or congestive heart failure the recommended starting dose is 40 mg two times a day. It is then gradually increase as a maintenance dosing. Lower dose is given to pediatric patients.
