Details

Introduction

Doxycycline is basically a man-made, synthetic antibiotic that is made from tetracycline. It works by impeding the proteins production caused by bacteria. It is effectual against broad range of bacteriauch as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoea, Chlamydia psittaci, and more.

Use

Doxycycline is prescribed for the treatment of multiple bacterial infections caused by Hemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, or Mycoplasma pneumoniae. In addition, the medication is also used for treating nongonococcal urethritis that is caused by Ureaplasma. Health problems such as typhus, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, cholera, brucellosis, chancroid, anthrax, syphilisand and acne may also be treated with the use of Doxycycline.

Side effects

Doxycycline generally does not show multiple side effects. The most commonly experienced side effects include problems like nausea, weakness, diarrhea or loose stools, abdominal aching, and vomiting. It may also cause teeth discoloration if taken by children less than 8 years of age. Some patients may also suffer from intense sunburn with this medication and hence, sunlight should be avoided while the treatment is on. Infants may show problems of bulging fontanels, whereas benign intracranial hypertension in may occur in adults. Normally, these problems were resolved as soon as the medication was stopped.

storage

Doxycycline must be maintained at room temperature i.e. 15-30

Composition

The active ingredient present in each Generic Doxycycline capsule is doxycycline hyclate.

Important Precautions

If taken in combination with other antibiotic preparations, it may cause overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, along with fungi. In this case, medication should be stopped immediately. Secondly, while taking the medication, ensure that incision and drainage or other surgical procedures are conducted in conjunction with proper, prescribed antibiotic therapy. Thirdly, if an individual is given doxycycline in the absence of confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic, the threat of the growth of drug-resistant bacteria may develop. And finally, Doxycycline may offer significant restraint of the asexual blood stages of Plasmodium strains.

Dosage and administration

Commonly, for most infection, the prescribed of this medication is once or twice a day for a week or two. In case of adult infections, the normally suggested dose of oral doxycycline is 200 mg (100 mg after every 12 hours) on the opening day of the treatment. It is then followed by a dose of 100 mg/day. Doxycycline can be taken with food.

Overdosage

If a patient takes an overdose of this medication, instant call for medical help should be made. Also, ensure to stop the medication immediately if your side effects persist.
