Exjade is a medicine developed to remove too much iron on the patient's body which are called chronic iron overload acquired from blood transfusions. This is good for treating ongoing high iron levels that caused multi blood transfusions. Although blood transfusion is greatly important among patients with blood diseases, the result builds extra iron that can further cause diabetes, liver illness and heart failure once not treated of this kind of medicine.


Exjade is good for the treatment of chronic iron accumulation in the patients who undergo blood transfusion. It helps remove excess iron in the body through binding on it and goes to the blood stream and excreted outside the body through a stool.

Side effects

Once a patient is getting some signs of allergic body reactions and suffer from side effects likes swelling of tongue, face, lips or throat, breathing difficulty and hives, call for an emergency help from the doctor while stopping the intake of the medicine. Serious side effects that also require for medical assistance are kidney problems, confusion, feeling short of breath, jaundice, swelling, stomach bleeding, bloody tarry stools, coughing, hearing or vision problems, spots bruises in skin, peeling and red skin rashes, weakness, loss of appetite, constipation, fever, body aches, severe blistering, flu like symptoms with unusual bleeding in mouth rectum, nose and vagina. While some mild side effects are anxiety, headache, stuffy nose, tired feeling, mild diarrhea, vomiting or stomaching as well as mild skin rashes.


Exjade bears contraindications to patients with hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to its components or specifically to deferasirox especially to patients whose creatinine clearance is less than 40 ml/minimum serum creatinine greater than 2 times the age proper for limit normal, poor patient's physical performance status with high myelodysplastic syndromes risk with malignancies and whose platelet counts is less than 50 times 10.

Exjade or deferasirox is widely utilized as chelating agent of iron. Each tablets of Exjade used to suspend orally has deferasirox of 125 mg or 250 mg, or 500 mg with other components likes, povidone, crospovidone, lactose monohydrate, silicon dioxide, sodium lauryl sulphate, magnesium stearate and microcrystalline cellulose.

Important Precautions

Check first if the patient is allergic on this drug medicine or not or if he has a medical history of cancer, blood disorders like , anemia, leukemia, low platelets levels or if the patient is using theophylline. The patient needs to talk to the doctor before taking the drug medicine especially if he suffers in liver or kidney diseases, intestinal or stomach bleeding, hearing or vision problems, less resistant immune system caused of HIV, steroids, AIDS, radiation or chemotheraphy.

Dosage and administration

A patient taking this medicine must properly take the right amount of medicine dose according to his doctor's prescription. Exjade has a recommendation of intake once a day as based on the doctor's advice and the patient must take it with an empty stomach before taking his meal. A patient must drop the tablet/s in the glass of water, or juice with enough volume of liquid with the doctor's direction. Stir the liquid until it has a regular mixture and drink it 30 minutes before eating. Tablets of this medicine are not good to chew, swallow or crush as this tablet needs dispersion in fluid. Stop using it when experiencing ill effects. Never take it in combination with Maalox, Gaviscon, Mi-Acid, Rulox, Mylanta and Amphojel.
