Gardasil is a recombinant vaccine that is given as a protection against human papillomavirus or HPV. This is given to both men and women, young and old. Gardasil has the generic name of Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus Recombinan Vaccine and is manufactured by Merck. This is given to the patient to prevent diseases that are caused by human papillomavirus which can be serious sometimes.


Gardasil is given to both men and women as it has various advantages to both. For women, Gardasil is given to those who are 9-26 years old in order to avoid getting illnesses like anal intraepithelial neoplasia, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, genital warts, vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia and a lot more. Men are given this vaccine when they are 9-26 years old also to keep them away from anal intraepithelial neoplasia, anal cancer and genital warts.

Side effects

Gardasil shown a safety favorable profile if compared to placebo. The most common side effect of Gardasil is the allergic reactions of the patient to the drug which can put their life at high risk. Other side effects that can be experienced are swollen glands, difficulty in breathing, tooth ache, insomnia, severe stomach pain and a lot more. In case of serious side effects, immediately contact your physician for help.


Quadrivalent HPV recombinant hypersensitivity. An individual who develop a symptom of hypersensitivity after giving the first dose should not continue using it. You have to tell the physician right away as this can be too risky. Pregnant must not be given this vaccine but those who breast feed their babies may. There are instances that women forget to inform their physician that they are pregnant before they are given this vaccine, in this case. She must call the HPV of the manufacturer in pregnancy registry to help the situation.

This medication is composed of purified particles of major capsid (L1) ptotein of 6, 11, 16, and 18 types that are like virus. Other ingredients of this drug are aluminum, sodium borate, sodium chloride, water, polysorbate and yeast protein.

Important Precautions

For the general patients: the vaccine is not use or introduce as a treatment for any active genital lesions, CIN, ValN or VIN. The vaccine is not a protection for any other viruses other than HPV.

Dosage and administration

Gardasil is IM administered for three separate doses of 0.5 mL according to the schedule given after the first dose. It should be administered on the deltoid region on the upper arm or in the anterolateral thigh area. The pre- filled syringe is for single use and not to be used for other individual after the first patient. There is no necessary dilution or reconstitution. Shake well before using. This is given in series of 3 shots. Once the patient has received its first does, then the second dose will be given after two months and the third one will be administered 6 months after the first those was given.


According to the studies, this vaccine should not be implemented or be administered along with heap B vaccine.
