Introduction

Generic Achromycin is an antibiotic prescribed for the treatment of a number of common infections. It comes from the family of antibiotics popularly known as tetracyclines. It works by impeding the ability of the bacteria to produce proteins that are pertinent for their growth and development. The process stops the spreading of the infection and finally the already present bacteria are destroyed by the immune system of the body.


Use

Generic Achromycin is used for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections, including Lyme disease, Cholera, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, certain types of pneumonia, Gonorrhea, some kinds of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and plague. It may also be prescribed for certain types of acne infection.


Side effects

Some of the common side effects caused by Generic Achromycin are Diarrhea, nausea, difficulty in swallowing, fatigue, dizziness, vaginal irritation or discharge, weakness, and fever, loss of appetite, upset stomach, and skin reaction on exposure to sunlight. More serious side effect that may require instant medical attention are difficulty swallowing or breathing, chest pain, hoarseness, swelling of your legs, face, lips, hands, eyes, throat, or tongue.

Composition

Each capsule has the active ingredient 250 mg and 500 mg tetracycline hydrochloride with other inactive ingredients.


Important Precautions

Patients who are taking penicillin antibiotics are strictly prohibited of taking Generic Achromycin. Doctors must be informed if the patient has certain medical condition such as allergies, breastfeeding, pregnancy, and kidney problems. Monitoring of dose and condition is strongly recommended for patients already taking vitamins/minerals quinapril, didanosine, antacids, sucralfate, digoxin, birth control pills, bismuth subsalicylate, anticoagulants, or methotrexate. The medication is not recommended to children below eight years of age as it may cause permanent yellowing of teeth.


Dosage and administration

Generic Achromycin dose prescription varies with each patient as it depends on the severity of the problem, age and other concerns like addition ongoing medication, allergies and kidney function. Normally, it is given two to four times a day for a week or two. The normally prescribed adult dose is 1-2 g/day in 2 or 4 divided doses. It should be taken 2 hours before or after the meals.


Overdosage

If overdose is suspected, it is best to call your local poison control center or emergency medical help immediately.
