Details

Introduction

Generic Amaryl or Glimepiride tablet belongs to sulfonylureas class of medication and is used as an oral blood sugar lowering drug. The medication is found effective in the treatment of type II diabetes, which is the most common diabetic type found in almost ninety percent of diabetic patients. Type II diabetes does not require insulin to control the blood sugar and is often treated with diet and oral medications. Generic Amaryl lowers the blood sugar level by stimulating insulin which is secreted from the pancreas into the blood. The medication was approved by FDA in 1995 for the effective treatment of type II diabetes.

Use

Generic Amaryl or Glimepiride is an oral medication used in the treatment of type II diabetes, which cannot be controlled alone with diet and exercise. The drug is often prescribed along with Glucophage, insulin boosting drug and may also be used along with insulin and other diabetes drugs. His anti-diabetic drug is used in combination with proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar level. The control of high blood sugar level helps to prevent blindness, kidney damage, loss of limbs, nerve problems, and sexual function problems along with lessening the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Composition

Generic Amaryl tablets contain the active ingredient Glimepiride.

Important Precautions

Diabetic patients taking generic Amaryl need to notify their doctor if they are allergic to glimepiride or are suffering from any other allergy problems. Even the inactive ingredients in the medication can cause some allergic problems so patients need to discuss it with their physician before starting the medication. Patients also need to disclose their medical history and conditions especially if they are suffering from any of the following conditions:

Dosage and administration

Patients are usually recommended with the starting dose of generic Amaryl of 1 to 2 milligrams taken once in a day. The medication must be taken along with breakfast or with the first main meal. However, the maximum starting dose should not be exceeded than 2 milligrams. The medication dosage is gradually increased in the interval of one to two weeks. With 1 to 4 milligrams of the medication the diabetes are probably controlled and in any case the patients should not exceed the dosage than 8 milligrams in a day.
