Generic Combivir is available in the combination of lamivudine (Epivir) and zidovudine (Retrovir) which are active against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). These components also inhibit the activity of reverse transcriptase and helps in the prevention of DNA and new viruses’ growth. If given individually the effectiveness is reduced.


Generic Combivir is prescribed for the treatment of HIV-infections in adult patients as well as in children who are and above 12 years. It is given to patients dealing with progressive immunodeficiency (less than 500/mcl of CD4+ cellularity).

Side effects

Some of the common and manageable side effects are diarrhea, sleeplessness, headache, poor appetite, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and stomach ache, upset and running nose. However, other side effects that need instant medical attention are breathing difficulties, fever, chills, or sore throat, pain, tingling, numbness in the hands or feet, fever, muscles pain and weakness, atypical bruising or bleeding, seizures, unusually weak or tired, gain in weight around waist, back, and thinning of face, arms, legs.


The medication should be stored between 2 and 30 degrees C (36 and 86 degrees F). Keep it safe from heat, light, children and pets.


Lamivudine/Zidovudine is the active ingredient.

Important Precautions

Special consideration are required to be taken by both patient and the doctor if it is to be prescribed to the patient dealing with hepatitis, hepatomegalia, or at least, is at the risk of having injury of liver. The requirement becomes even more important in the cases where Lamivudine/Zidovudine medication is used for the treatment of overweight/ obese women. Secondly, it is important for the patients to know that the treatment with Lamivudine/Zidovudine does not stop or avoid transmission of HIV-infection, and hence, the possibility to transmit the disease to other people via sexual contact, blood transfusions from infected people is very much there. Thirdly, the medication may have adverse effects on the unborn; hence, patients must inform doctors about their pregnancy. And lastly, Lamivudine affects driving and so, patients should not drive while on this medication.

Dosage and administration

The medication is usually required to be administered two times in a day. Take one pill in the morning and the other in the evening. It can be taken on an empty or full stomach.


In case of overdose suspicion, inform your doctor immediately and call your nearest emergency medical help. Symptoms of overdose will be same as the side effects.
