Introduction

Generic Desyrel, brand name of Trazodone, is an oral antidepressant drug, which affects the chemical messengers within the brain used by the nerves to communicate with each other. This prescription medication is used in the treatment of depression also referred as major depression or clinical depression. It works by increasing the activity of brain chemicals serotonin that becomes unbalance in brain and causes depression. Manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb, generic Desyrel is also used for some off-label treatment.


Use

Generic Desyrel, an antidepressant medication, is used to provide relief from depression or anxiety disorders. The medication may also be used to provide relief from tension, sleeplessness and chronic pain. Generic Desyrel is not only found effective in the treatment of depression but is also found effective in the treatment of sleep disorders, loss of appetite, kleptomania, slow reaction along with some other disorders.


Side effects

Some of the side effects associated with generic Desyrel include allergic reactions like itching, skin rash or irregular heartbeat, faint or light headed feeling, sexual dysfunction, painful erection, or suicidal thoughts or other mood changes. In case of any of these side effects, patients should immediately seek medical attention to overcome the problems of side effects. Important Precautions

It is always safe to discuss one health condition before taking Generic Desyrel as one should not use this medication if allergic to trazodone or any other ingredient of generic Desyrel. This medication must not be taken along with MAO inhibitor like furazolidone, isocarboxazid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline or tranylcypromine in the last 14 days. Besides people suffering from any of the following problems should need dose adjustment or special test prior taking Generic Desyrel. • Heart disease • Bipolar disease • Kidney or liver disease • Suicidal thoughts or drug abuse history • Heart attack


Dosage and administration

Generic Desyrel dosage for the treatment of depression in adults is 150-600 mg per day. However the initial dosage of generic Desyrel is 150 mg per day and must be administered in one or more daily doses. Largest dose of the medication must be taken at night. The medication takes time of few weeks to show the effects of treatment and therefore dosage are adjusted slowly upwards to achieve the best result of the treatment. Elderly and weak person are recommended with the lower dose. Insomnia patients are recommended with the dosage of 25 to 75mg of medication.

The medication must be administered after the meal or light snack to reduce the risk of dizziness. The food also increases the amount of absorbed food in the body. The medication must be administered by mouth with a glass of water and must be taken at regular intervals.


Overdosage

Overdose condition requires emergency medical attention as this condition can prove to be fatal especially if it is taken along with alcohol, barbiturates such as phenobarbital, or sedatives such as diazepam. Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, vomiting, prolonged or painful penis erection, fast heartbeat, convulsions or breathing that slows or stops.
