Introduction

Lidocaine/Prilocaine is also known as Prilox Cream. It is used to prevent pain occurring from intravenous catheter insertion, superficial surgical procedures, blood sampling etc.


Use

Lidocaine/Prilocaine is used as a skin anesthesia used when having intravenous catheter insertion, superficial surgical procedures, and blood sampling etc. it may be used for laser hair removal process. It is used as an anesthesia of leg ulcers to facilitate mechanical cleansing/debridement. It may also be used to reduce the pain before having tattoo on the skin. The main purpose it serves is to reduce the pain. It can be used in pregnancy and lactation


Side effects

The common side effects of using Lidocaine/Prilocaine are paleness, erythema (redness) and oedema, burning, irritation, itching or warmth at the place where applied. The rare side effects include purpuric or petechial, especially at longer application time in children with atopic dermatitis or mollusca contagiosa. In rare cases, local anaesthetic preparations have resulted in allergic reactions


Contraindication

The patients are contraindicated to Lidocaine/Prilocaine are those who are hypersensitivity to the amide-type local anesthetics or to any other ingredient of the product.


storage

It must be kept at a cool place but do not store above 30°C. It is advisable that the drug is not frozen.


Composition

Lidocaine/Prilocaine is available in cream form, having strength of 25 mg, 30 mg. A 5% emulsion preparation will use Lidocaine 2.5% w/w (25 mg/g) and Prilocaine 2.5% w/w (25 mg/g). The other ingredients in Lidocaine/Prilocaine are polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil, Carbomer 974P, sodium hydroxide and water purified.


Important Precautions

This drug should not be used in infants up to 12 months of age, i.e. less than 37 months. Patients with defective glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, hereditary or idiopathic methaemoglobinaemia are in a more risk of reaction of this drug. In term newborn infants, infants and children, Lidocaine/Prilocaine should only be used on intact skin and should not be applied to genital mucosa. Precaution should be taken to limit the dose and area of application and to prevent accidental ingestion. When used near eye, care must be taken as it may cause eye irritation.


Dosage and administration

The dosage for the treatment of leg ulcers is up to 15 times and it is used for a period of 1-2 months without loss of efficacy or increased number or severity of adverse events. Doses greater than 10 grams should be given to patients for plasma treatment. Lidocaine/Prilocaine approx. 5-10 g is used for Genital mucosa treatment for 5-10 minutes.
