Generic Lariam or Mefloquine belongs to anti-malarial class of drug, which is administered to prevent and treat malaria. The medication was developed at Defense's Walter Reed Army Institute of Research of United States Defense department in 1970 as a synthetic analogue of quinine. Generic Lariam works by destroying the parasites found in the red blood cells of the human body.
Generic Lariam or Mefloquine is an anti-malarial agent used in the treatment of malarial infections transmitted by mosquitoes. The medication is usually recommended to people prior travel if they are moving to an area where malaria infection is quite common. This medication is generally indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate acute malaria.
Generic Lariam contains active ingredient mefloquine hydrochloride.
People should follow important and safety precautions while taking this medication as this medication is not recommended to patients who are allergic to Mefloquine or to any other similar medications. Mefloquine is also not prescribed to people suffering from malaria if they have recent history of any of the following conditions:
People taking generic Lariam are recommended to strictly follow the doctor advised dosage and administration to obtain the best result of the medication. For the treatment of mild to moderate malaria caused by P. vivax or mefloquine-susceptible strains of P. falciparum the adults are recommended with five tablets of 250 mg strength as a single oral dose. The medication must not be taken on an empty stomach and must be administered with at least 240 ml of water. If the improvement is not experienced within 48 to 72 hours the patients must discontinue taking generic Lariam.
