Generic Nivaquine comes from the family of drugs called 4-aminoquinoline or antimalarials. The medication starts acting by impeding the process of formation of blood formation post the secretion of schizonts tissue. The medications works against the blood forms of species of Plasmodium.


Generic Nivaquine is prescribed for the treatment of Malaria. It is given to the patients who are dealing with Malaria and require controlling the clinical symptoms and parsitaemia will be controlled.

Side effects

Side-effects reported in the treatment and prophylaxis of malaria is generally less common and less severe than those reported in rheumatoid arthritis. With malaria, the dosage and is relatively small and for shorter duration that that prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Common side effects of Generic Nivaquine are various skin eruptions, pruritus headache, and gastro-intestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Less common side effects include problems like anxiety, psychotic episodes, seizures and personality changes. With larger doses, the side effects of visual disturbances and risk of developing retinopathy along with hair loss, bluish-black pigmentation of the mucous membranes and skin, bleaching of hair pigment, photosensitivity, tinnitus, problem in hearing, nerve deafness, neuromyopathy, and myopathy.

Chloroquine Sulphate is the active ingredient in the composition.

Important Precautions

If you have been prescribed generic Nivaquine for longer duration, ensure to get your eyes check up before starting to take the medicine. Visual disturbances may occur causing problem in operating heavy machinery and driving. Patients who have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency are required to be monitored for haemolytic anaemia while the chloroquine treatment is running. In addition, patients are advised to take all the precautionary measures to keep safe any kind of mosquito bites. Nursing mother, pregnant women or women who are trying to get pregnant, must consult with the doctor their health condition, before starting to take this medicine.

Dosage and administration

For rheumatoid arthritis, the usual dose is 1 tablet (150 mg base) daily. The highest dose is 2 tablets (300 mg base). For Malaria, the course has 4 tablets (600 mg) in one dose followed by 2 tablets after around six to eight hours and finally 2 tablets. This runs daily for the next two days. The dosage of chloroquine treatment is adjusted by the doctor in accordance with severity of the infection, the condition, and the age and weight of the patient. The dose is taken once a week on the same day each week. Doctors and health care providers highly advise to start taking Nivaquine 1 week before entering an endemic area and then continue for 4 weeks after leaving.


In case of overdose suspicion, it is advised to call for immediate medical assistance. Also, the doctor of the patient should be informed as soon as possible.
