Cyclosporine is used in the management of chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca and in chronic superficial keratitis in dogs. Cyclosporine ointment is a breakthrough in veterinary ophthalmic drugs. Chemically it is an undecapeptide metabolite of fungus, tolypocladium inflatum gams.It is used for a many ophthalmic conditions in dogs.

Cyclosporine when applied opthalmically acts as an immunomodulator of diseases that are linked with the faulty function of immune system like keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK). It increases the aqueous tear production as proved by schirmer tear test.

Side effects

Periocular and ocular inflammatory reactions, transient hyperemia, epiphora, palpebral inflammation, mild discomfort of the eye, periocular redness, mild alopecia and lid spasm are some of the side effects.

When the animal is switched to cyclosporine ointment from any other therapeutic agent for like keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis, it must be remembered that the effects of the ointment are not apparent immediately after the administration of the ointment. Several days to a period of few weeks are needed before the withdrawal of previously initiated therapy. In cases of viral or fungal ocular infection the treatment with cyclosporine ointment is delayed till the fungal or viral infection has subsided. It should never be stopped abruptly, as there is the potential danger of clinical relapse that may be sometimes wrongly judged as an adverse reaction of the cyclosporine ophthalmic ointment.

Store between 2° and 30°C (36° and 86°F). Keep it out of reach of children. Keep it away from direct heat or sunlight.

Each gm of the tube contains 2 mg of cyclosporine.

Important Precautions

The safety of cyclosporine ointment has not been determined in puppies and pregnant bitches so in such cases it should be given only after consultation with a veterinary specialist.

Dosage and administration

Apply a small strip about the size of 1/4 inch of the strip of cyclosporine ointment to the affected eyes of the dog every 12 hours. The ointment may be placed in the conjunctival sac or directly onto the cornea of the animal. In cases of keratoconjunctivitis sicca the ointment should administered in the early stages of the disease before dense corneal scarring or irreversible changes in the lachrymal tissue have taken place. So the disease must be diagnosed and therapy must be started as early as possible.
