Levodopa and benserazide is used to treat Parkinson's disease which is a progressive nervous disease occurring most often after the age of 50, associated with the destruction of brain cells that produce dopamine and characterized by muscular tremor, slowing of movement, partial facial paralysis, peculiarity of gait and posture, and weakness. The drug increases the effects of levodopa thereby; increasing levels of dopamine in the brain and maintains the decrease in the Parkinson's syndrome. It is a prescription medicine meaning that it is only available with a prescription.


It is indicated in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Side effects

Common side effects include muscle twitches and involuntary movements and increased sex drive. The drug may cause urine to become reddish in colour. Under certain cases it has been reported that the medicine causes sleepiness and depression. Less common side effects include a drop in the blood pressure that causes dizziness while changing physical position, unusual tiredness, and seizures, pounding feeling in the ears, swollen glands and flushing.


Levodopa/ Benserazide drug is contraindicated in patients under 25 years of age, It must be avoided by patients suffering from severe heart, kidney, hepatic and endocrine diseases. Do not use the drug if you had, have skin cancer, severe psychotic issues and have taken anti-depressant in the past 14 days. It is also contraindicated in pregnant and nursing women. Do not take the medicine if you are allergic to any active or inactive ingredient.


Store at room temperature between 15 to 30 degree Celsius; store at a dry, cool place and away from the reach of children. Protect from direct heal, light, moisture.


Levodopa/ Benserazide drug is available in the form of tablets containing active ingredients; Levodopa 200 mg and benserazide base 50 mg in the form of benserazide hydrochloride. Inactive ingredients: gelatin, indigotine, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, talc, and titanium dioxide.

Important Precautions

People having lung, kidney, and cardiovascular, liver and endocrine diseases must inform their doctor of their medical history. Patients of diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, open angle glaucoma, osteomalacia and psychiatric disorders must use it with caution after reporting their medical health to the doctor. The medicine may cause sleepiness so take caution while driving a vehicle or with other activities.Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask the pharmacist to know how to dispose of medicines after expiry date.

Dosage and administration

Administer the tablet orally. It is better to take the drug during or right after meal. Do not bite on the tablet. Keep the frequency of drug intake as prescribed by the doctor. In case of missing a dose, take it as soon as you remember, if it's about time for next dose, do not take a double dose rather continue with the regular dosing schedule.
