This medication was advocated to be used mainly for Meniere's disease. This medication has been approved by the FDA for over 40 years already but approval was later on withdrawn because of it contained deficiencies. The withdrawal was then upheld in 1968 by a US court of appeals. Later studies report a significant reduction of vertigo attacks using betahistine. Presently, it is still unclear if betahistine has any effect in Meniere's disease. Serc was again reviewed in 1999, the result stated that the drug is not harmful but little also has little evidence that it has any therapeutic effect. At this time, Serc is being used to counter vertigo.


Each tablet of SERC contains betahistine dihydrochloride 4 milligrams. Betahistine dihydrochloride is an analog of histamine. It is absorbed readily from the gastrointestinal tract once taken. Within 3 to 5 hours, it is converted to 2 metabolites and peak concentrations in blood. What it does is it improves the blood circulation in the striae vascularis of the inner ear.
