Introduction

Trifluoperazine belongs to the the phenothiazine chemical class of antyipsychotic group of drugs.iis widely used in the treatment of acute mania, agitation and other mental disorders. These drugs were mainly developed to treat psychosis.


Use

Trifluoperazine is used in the treatment of schizophrenia. In the short term treatment of anxiety this drug is used. All forms of Parkinsonism are treated by this drug. It is used as adjuvant therapy along with levodopa in the treatment of Parkinsonism.


Side effects

Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue blurred vision, breast enlargement in both males and female, breathing problems, chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, confusion, restlessness, dizziness or fainting spells, drooling, shaking, fever, chills, sore throat, abnormal production of milk in females, allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips are the common side effects. Involuntary or uncontrollable movements of the eyes, mouth, head, arms, and legs, seizures, stomach area pain may also be noticed.


Contraindication

In patients who have irregular movements of face and muscles, epileptic seizure, disease of the retina of the eye, increased pressure in eyes, epileptic seizure, disease of the retina of the eye, increased pressure in eyes, decreased sweating, cannot empty bladder, a mother who is producing milk and breastfeeding, breast cancer, anemia, the drug is contraindicated.

It should be kept out of reach of children who may take it accidentally. Store the drug in a tight container away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the date of expiry.


Composition

Each tablet contains 5 mg or 2 mg of Trifluoperazine that is given in oral form.

Dosage and administration

It should be individualized according to the need of the patient. In patients above 60 years of age the initial dose of the drug should be low and the dose should be increased gradually.
