Details

Introduction

Solifenacin belongs to the urinary antispasmodic of the antimuscarinic group. Generally, it is used in the treatment of the over active urinary bladder with or without urge incontinence. It is a competitive muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonistic agent. Acetylcholine binds with the M3 receptor helps in the contraction of the smooth muscles in the urinary bladder (detrusor muscle). Solifenacin prevents the binding of the acetylcholine with these receptors and make the detrusor muscles of the urinary bladder to relax. By this process it allows the bladder to retain larger volumes of urine and reducing the frequency or repeated emergency of micturition.

Use

It is used in the treatment of patients having spastic bladder and due to which the patient is feeling the urgency in micturition. It works by relieving the narrowing of the urethra and other parts of the urinary tract.

Side effects

Unlike other drugs, this also excludes the adverse effects on the human body as extensions of its pharmacological actions. The chief and common side effects are dry mouth, constipation and blurred vision. Like other anticholinergic drugs it also causes heat prostration due to the decreased perspiration.

Contraindication

It should not be prescribed to the patients previously having hypersensitivity to the use of this drug. It should not be given to the patient having urinary retention, gastric retention, severe hepatic problem and uncontrolled or poorly controlled closed-angle glaucoma. This drug is also contraindicated in the case like prolonged QT-syndrome.

storage

It is stored in the dry and cool place in the normal room temperature ranging from 15 degree celsius to 30 degree celsius. It should not be exposed to the direct sunlight and moisture. It should be kept away from the reach of the children and the pets.

Composition

This drug with 5mg contains 5mg of solifenacin succinate and 10mg film coated tablet contains 10mg solifenacin succinate along with lactose monohydrate in an amount of 107.5 in tablet containing 5mg of solifenacin succinate and 102.5mg in the tablet containing 10mg of solifenacin succinate. Important Precautions

Before prescribing this drug, the physician should assess the ECG to find out the QT-curve. The hepatic and the renal conditions should be examined. The gastrointestinal assessment should be done. Before using this drug the patient should be aware about the expiry date of the drug.

Dosage and administration

It has a long half life period. Therefore, one tablet in a day is enough to control the bladder for 24 hours. If require, it can be continued for a longer period of time and sometimes can be given more than once in a day in case of infectious spasm or which occurs as a side effect of prostate hypertrophy.
