The drug Vetmedin is known as a treatment for dogs who have a congestive heart failure due to MVD or DCM. This drug act in two ways such as opening up the blood vessels carrying blood to and from the heart, reducing the workload of the dog's heart, increasing the strength of the dog’s heart beat, and improving the pumping action of the heart. This combined action is called the inodilation. While taking this drug, the vet may also prescribe other medicines at the same time.

This drug is prescribed to relieve the symptoms of heart failure and so as help your dog to achieve a more comfortable life. It can also help to prolong the life of dogs that are suffering from heart failure related to an underlying mitral valve disease.

Important Precautions

This drug is intended only in dogs with clinical evidence of heart failure. If the dosage is at 3 and 5 times and is administered over a 6 month period, it may cause an exaggerated hemodynamic response in the heart of a normal dog, which was associated with a cardiac disease or illness. The laboratory studies indicate that the positive inotropic effect of the drug pimobendan may be an effect of the concurrent use of a calcium channel blocker and ß-adrenergic blocker.

Dosage and administration

This drug should be given to your dog by mouth twice a day, approximately one hour before meal, and 12 hours apart in the morning and at night. It is strongly advised to use the dose that your vet recommends. The response of each dog may vary and it depends on how ill they are to start with the treatment. You should be able to see an improvement in your dog within one week, which will be more noticeable in the following weeks of undergoing treatment. In case of a missed dose, take the drug as soon as you remember and just give the next dose at the normal scheduled time. There is no need to increase the dose of the drug.
