Introduction

Zonisamide is indicated as adjunctive medication in the treatment regimen, in adult patients with partial seizures with or without secondary generalization. Zonisamide was developed by Uno in the year 1972 and until then now, this medicine is known for its effective results. It was developed as a solution to the problem of obesity.


Use

Zonisamide is an antiepileptic drug and used to treat adults already receiving other antiepileptic drugs but still suffers from seizures affecting a part of the brain (partial seizures) that can be followed or not affecting the whole brain seizures (secondary generalization) .


Side effects

Like all medicines, it can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. It belongs to a group of drugs (sulfonamides) that can cause severe allergic reactions, severe skin rashes and blood disorders, which can rarely fatal. Take your doctor immediately if: 1. have difficulty breathing, face, lips or tongue swelling or severe rash on the skin, as these symptoms may indicate that you have a severe allergic reaction. 2. Self-damage your thoughts or suicide 3. If you experience muscle pain or weakness, as this may be a sign of abnormal muscle damage that can cause kidney problems.


Contraindication

Do not take this medicine if: 1.you are allergic to any component of it's (see section 6Further information), 2.you are allergic to sulphon amide medicines. Examples include antibiotics, sulfonamides, thiamine diuretics and anti diabetic sulfonylurea's. Take special care: It belongs to a group of drugs (sulfonamides) that can cause severe allergic reactions, severe skin rashesandblood disorders, and whichvery rarelycan causedeath.

Keep out of reach and sight of children. Do not use Zonisamide after the expiry date on the blister and carton after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.


Composition

The active substance in the products that are manufactured by the company is Zonisamide. Or dispersible tablets contain 25 mg of the active constituent. Alternatively, dispersible tablets contain 50 mg of active constituent. The tablets that have increased net weight have more amount of Zonisamide.


Important Precautions

Before you take this, tell your doctors if 1. you are under 18 years. It is not recommended for you. 2. are elderly because they may need a dose adjustment of it and you can have a higher probability of developing a severe allergic reaction or skin rash when taking it (see section 4, possible side effects). 3. You have liver problems, because they may need a dose adjustment of this medicine.


Dosage and administration

Always use it exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. The usual dose in adults that is recommended is 50 mg per day, divided into two equal doses of 25 mg. This can be increased to 100 mg every one to two weeks, usual daily dose is between 300 mg and 500 mg.Some people may respond to lower doses. Increasing the dose may be slower if you have side effects, are elderly or if you have kidney or liver problems. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you feel that, the effect of this is too strong or too weak.
