Introduction

Zivorax is used to treat the herpes simplex, a viral disease. It is known by the generic name of acyclovir. Acyclovir is commonly used for the cold sores, which are the blisters on the skin of the mouth and lips area that may occur during winter season commonly making the patient to feel the pain in their sores. This is available commonly in the form of cream of varying weights which is prescribed depending on the intensity of the sores. It is easily applicable to the antiviral sites on the body. It is also used to cure the skin infections. It can be prescribed the gynecologists and dentists too.


Use

It is used in the patients having the viral action of herpes simplex and having cold sores.


Side effects

The mostly reported side effects of the acyclovir creams are the irritation on the applied area, shedding of the skin, dryness on the site, redness of the applied area and itching. Some patients however also reported the inflammation and heating of the skin when acyclovir was applied. It should be avoided during the pregnancy as it may incorporate in the baby body as it passes the placenta. Acyclovir passes through the breast milk to the baby body so it should be avoided during the mother feed. However, Side effects on the fertility are yet not experienced.


Contraindication

Zivorax is contraindicated in the patients having hypersensitivity to the acyclovir. It can cause severe infection to the skin if applied to the person having sensitivity to any of its compound but especially to the acyclovir.


storage

Acyclovir cream should be stored below 25 degree centigrade. It should not be refrigerated.


Composition

Zivorax is 5 % w/w cream available in 5, 10 and 25 mg and ml. The most active compound of the zivorax is the acyclovir. Acyclovir the active compound which has a strong antiviral action during the herpes simplex condition and strongly acts when applied directly in the form of a cream. Zivorax is a white cream smooth while applying. Zivorax contains the compounds besides acyclovir like the paraffin, cetostearyl alcohol, poloxamer 407, sodium laurel sulfate, pure water and propylene glycol.


Important Precautions

Care might be taken while applying acyclovir to the infected area as it can cause irritation on certain sensitive areas of the body like vagina, mouth area, nose linear area etc as it is not synthesized to apply over the mucous membranous areas. Avoid the contact with the eye area it can damage eyes. Acyclovir cream should not be given to the patients of bone marrow and AIDS patients. They should be cured by giving the zivorax tablets instead of cream. It also proves toxic in the immune- patients.


Dosage and administration

Acyclovir cream is prescribed commonly five times in a day at the infected area. It should also be applied before sleeping and after washing and drying of face. Application should be done regularly after four hours for five days. It should not be mixed or applied over other cosmetics or medicines.
