Lumigan is described as a synthetic prostamide analog with ocular hypotensive activity. The mechanism of this medicine is to regulate the flow of fluid within the eye to keep up a normal pressure.


Lumigan is prescribed for the treatment of high pressure inside the eye occurring because of glaucoma or other eye diseases like ocular hypertension. The medicine acts by reducing the increased pressure inside the eye and help prevent blindness. In addition, it may also be used to increase the quantity, thickness and length of eyelashes when applied by brush to the eyelash.

Side effects

Burning, stinging, irritation, redness of the eye may occur. Your eyes may water and you may get the feeling that there is something in your eyes. Patients may also feel increased sensitivity to light. Although these side effects are normal, they should be reported to the doctor if they persist or worsen. In addition, brown discoloration of the colored portion of eye, increment in eyelash number, length and thickness, and darkening of the eyelashes or eyelids may also occur in the treated eye. Serious allergic reaction like rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness and trouble breathing are very less likely to appear.


The medicine should be stored between 36 and 77 degrees F (2 and 25 degrees C). Keep it safe from light and moisture. Do not keep in the bathroom.


Bimatoprost is the active ingredient in the composition.

Important Precautions

Prior to taking this medicine, it is vital for the patient to inform the doctor if they have or every had the following health conditions • Allergy to medicine, food, dye or any other substance • Macular edema, iritis, uveitis, lens extraction or aphakia • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant • Eye injury or surgery • Breastfeeding In addition, patients are advised not to drive or operate any heavy machinery while taking this medicine.

Dosage and administration

Patients should apply the medication as directed by the doctor. Normally, a dose of one drop in the evening in the affected eye is suggested. Wash your hands properly before using the medication. Do not touch the tip of the applicator as it may get infected. If you wear lenses, wait for at least 15 minutes to wear them back, after putting the drop in your eye. Do not increase the quantity and frequency of the medication as it may cause side effects.


On suspecting an overdose, immediate medical help should be contacted. The medicine can cause harmful effects if swallowed.
