The meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine is a lyophilised content of the different strains of meningococcal infections that occur in children as well as in adults. The vaccine is a single dose injection and can be given in children as well as adults in one dose containing the polysaccharide antigen.


The meningococcal vaccine is given to children above 2 years of age, adolescent and adults to protect them from meningococcal infections cause by the common A, C, W135 and Y strains. The vaccine is given for people who are at higher risk such as people who are living in epidemic and endemic areas. People, who are in contact with such patients and in the job of handing people with meningococcal infections, should be administered with this vaccine.

Side effects

Some of the side effects are very common and this group includes symptoms such as drowsiness, irritability, headache, appetite loss, gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, etc. hypersensitivity reactions and allergic reactions are to be taken care of and adequate arrangements should be made to provide the safety. Arthralgia, muscle stiffness and influenza like symptoms can be seen occurring but in a very few patients.


If the person is hypersensitive to any of the components of the vaccine, then it should be administered. Pregnant females and mothers who are nursing children should not be vaccinated with meningococcal vaccine.


The ideal temperature for the storage of the vaccine is 2-8 deg C and not at freezing temperature. The diluent needs to be stored in 25 deg C and the transportation of the vaccine should be done under cold storage system.


Mencevax ACWY mono dose injection is a vaccine containing the lyophilised polysaccharide antigen of Neisseria meningitides belonging to serogroups of A, C, W135 and Y strains. The 0.5 ml of vaccine contains each polysaccharide in the concentration of 50 mcg of each strain. The active antigenic ingredients are present in form of powder while there is one diluent of sodium chloride for injection, apart from the sucrose and trometamol in the powder.

Important Precautions

Whenever the vaccine is to be administered, it should be done in a hospital set up and adequate facilities should be arranged for cases where there will be hypersensitivity reactions. Proper medical history should be elicited by the physician. The vaccine should not be given in people with acute febrile illness. Since the vaccine is made up of antigens of 4 types of antigens, all types of meningococcal infections are not prevented in the children or adults. Those who have a history of impaired immunity or have disease conditions that decrease immunity should be advised for taking care and reporting any adverse effects. Pregnancy should not be advised if the person has recently taken the vaccine. Since there has not been adequate trials based on nursing mothers, the vaccines are not advised to be used. Motor coordination requiring concentration and locomotor skills are not supposed to be given this vaccine.

Dosage and administration

The 0.5 ml of the meningococcal vaccine is to be administered for one dose vaccination and is injected in children subcutaneously. Since the vaccine provides immunity for 3 years, revaccination should be considered in children less than 5 years of age.
