Details

Introduction

This drug is known as an expectorant and is also used along with other antithyroid medications to prepare the thyroid gland for surgical removal, to treat overactive thyroid conditions and to protect the thyroid in a radiation exposure emergency. The drug works by shrinking the size of the thyroid gland and decreasing the amount of thyroid hormones .In a radiation emergency, the drug blocks only the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine, protecting it from damage and reducing the risk of thyroid cancer.


Use

The drug is used to treat an overactive thyroid and to protect the thyroid gland from the effects of radiation from inhaled or swallowed radioactive iodine.


Side effects

The side effects of the drug are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomachache, metallic taste in the mouth, headache, fever, or acne. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience an unlikely but serious side effects that may occur such as sore teeth or gums, burning mouth or throat, increased saliva, swelling inside the mouth, severe headache, signs of decreased thyroid gland function, eye irritation/swollen eyelids, swelling of the front of the neck/throat, confusion, numbness or pain in the hands and feet. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: chest pain, black stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, bloody diarrhea. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as a rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing, severe dizziness, and fever with joint pain.


Contraindication

The drug is contraindicated to patients who have hypersensitivity to the drug and to those patients who have bronchitis.

Store the tablets at room temperature between 15-30 degrees Celsius away from light and moisture.

The drug is available in tablet form and with strength of 130mg.


Important Precautions

Before using this drug, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have a current attack/worsening of bronchitis, a certain type of skin condition, a certain type of blood vessel and nodular thyroid disease with heart disease. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist regarding your medical history, especially of thyroid disorders such as Graves' disease, multinodular goiter, autoimmune thyroiditis; overactive thyroid disease; tuberculosis; high potassium blood level; kidney disease; Addison's disease; and myotonia congenita. Caution is advised when this drug is administered to newborn babies who are younger than 1 month old.


Dosage and administration

You must take this medication by mouth with a full glass of water or as directed by the doctor. Take after meals or with food to avoid stomach upset and be sure to drink plenty of liquids. After taking the drug, do not lie down for 10 minutes. The dosage will be based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In children, the dosage is on age. Do not increase your dose, take it more often, or take it for longer than what is prescribed by your doctor. Take the tablets once every 24 hours.
