Tofranil is a tricyclic antidepressant effectively used for treating depression or in some children to help reduce bedwetting.

Imipramine is a part of a group of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants that works by increasing the activity of certain chemicals in the brain that help elevate mood. It is used for treating depression and in some cases, used in children to help reduce bedwetting.

Side effects

You should check with your doctor if common side effects such as dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; excitement; headache; impotence; nausea; nightmares; pupil dilation; sensitivity to sunlight; sweating; tiredness; upset stomach; vomiting; weakness; and weight loss or gain persist or become bothersome. If severe side effects occur, you should seek medical assistance right away. Some of these severe side effects include severe allergic reactions; blurred vision or other vision changes; changes in sex drive; confusion; fainting; fever; chest pain; frequent or difficult urination; hallucinations; mental or mood changes; seizures; suicidal thinking or behaviors; swelling of the testicles; trouble walking or keeping your balance; worsening of depression; trouble sleeping; and other abnormalities or changes that occur.

Patients with a known hypersensitivity to imipramine should not be given the drug. It is important that you tell your doctor if you drink alcohol-containing beverages daily or if you have a history of alcohol abuse; if you take thyroid medicine; if you have a history of suicidal thoughts or behavior or any other mental disorders; or if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. You should also inform your doctor if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine especially azole antifungal, cimetidine; arsenic, astemizole; barbiturates or phenytoin; anticholinergics, carbamazepine, or sympathomimetics; clonidine, guanethidine, or guanfacin; or many other medicines that may interact with this drug.

This drug should be stored in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. It should be stored away from heat, moisture, and light and must be kept away from the reach of children and pets.

One Tofranil tablet contains 25mg of imipramine hcl and is supplied in blister packs of 50.

Important Precautions

The patient and their family or caregivers must be informed that antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions in children, teenagers, and young adults. They should talk with the patient's doctor to be sure that the benefits of taking this medication outweigh the risks. Patients must be closely watched for any changes in their behavior. Drinking Tofranil may also cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision and could get worse if this drug is taken with alcohol or certain medicines. It may cause you to get sunburned easily and increase the risk of heatstroke so proper precautions should be imposed.

Dosage and administration

It is recommended for elderly patients, adolescents, and outpatients to take in lower dosages of imipramine as compared to hospitalized patients who will be under close supervision. The dosage should be initiated at a low level and then increased gradually. This drug should be taken by mouth with or without food. Taking this medication at bedtime may help reduce side effects so you should discuss this possibility with your doctor and take it as prescribed.
