This Optimmune medication is known as a sterile eye ointment which contains cyclosporine which helps to treat keratoconjunctivitis Sica or KCS or dry eye in dogs. This eye medication requires a prescription from the veterinarian. Cyclosporine has broad anti-inflammatory effects which help to reduce damage to the tear glands while also stimulating tear production. This ophthalmic medication is an immunosuppressive agent commonly used to reduce inflammation in the eye(s).


This medication is used in dogs for the treatment of chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) or dry eye. This agent is also used to reduce inflammation in the eye(s).

Side effects

This drug is not known to produce serious side effects. However, there are common side effects produced by this medication such as burning, redness, pain, tearing, discharge, stinging, itching, or blurring of the eye. Continue to take the medication and talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.


Do not use this ophthalmic medication if the pet has any type of infection in the eye(s). Contact your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating.


Store this medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the tube properly capped to maintain sterility of the contents. Keep the medication away from reach of children.


The drug is in a form of an ointment with strength of 2mg per gm. It contains 2 mg cyclosporine and other ingredients such as petrolatum, corn oil and petrolatum and lanolin oil. It is stored in 3. 5 gm containers.

Important Precautions

Make sure that you do not touch the tube opening to any surface including the eyes or hands. This medication may cause blurring of vision. Dosage and administration

This medication is approved for veterinary use in dogs only. This is a prescription medication available as a sterile eye ointment which is then usually applied as a 1/4 inch strip to the eye(s) every 12 hours. Make sure that you do not touch the tube opening to any surface which includes the eyes and hands since the opening of the tube is sterile. If this area becomes contaminated, it may cause an infection in the eye. It is necessary to use this medication exactly as directed by the veterinarian for achievement of better results. If you do not understand the directions, you may ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Be sure to wash your hands before using the eye ointment. Then, apply a 1/4 inch strip of the ointment into the lower eyelid.
