Introduction

Zocor belongs to the group of medications that is called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. This drug helps decreases the bad cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood and helps increase the good level of cholesterol.


Use

This drug helps to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and other heart problems. This is also used in coronary heart diseases and other risk factors.


Side effects

During the treatment there are conditions that may affect the patients. Some of these allergic reactions are having difficulty in breathing, hives and swelling the lips, throat, tongue, and face. Some the less serious side effects are headache, constipation, stomach pain or indigestion, insomnia, cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat mild nausea, mild skin rash joint pain, and mild muscle pain. Some of the serious side effects are unexplained muscle pain, fever, swelling, weight gain, tenderness, pain or burning when you urinate, weakness, urinating less than usual or not at all unusual tiredness, dark colored urine, nausea, upper stomach pain, clay-colored stools, itching, and loss of appetite, dark urine, and jaundice. If these condition are always showing up stop taking the medication and call your doctor at once.


Contraindication

This drug is contraindicated with drugs such as Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune, Danocrine, Lopid, Reyataz, Norvir, Kaletra, Ketek, Lexiva, Aptivus, Sporanox, Biaxin, E.E.S., EryPed, Ery-Tab, Viracept, Nizoral, Noxafil Invirase Erythrocin, Pediazole, and Prezista. For patients that are having allergic reaction from the drug is contraindicated to use. For patients having medical history of conditions such as liver disease and kidney disease, diabetes and thyroid gland are contraindicated to be used.

Dosage and administration

The initial dose for the Hyperlipidemia and Cardiovascular Risk Reduction is 10 mg to 20 mg per day and must be taken in the evening. The daily maintenance of this is 40mg once a day and should be taken in the evening. This drug should combine with the intake of food and a cup of water. You must not chew, crush or break the drug into half, just let it melt in the mouth or in the stomach.
