Aciclovir is otherwise known as Acyclovir which is a Guanosine analogous antiviral agent generally used for the treatment of the Herpes simplex viral infections, as well as in the treatment of Varicella zoster and Herpes zoster. In the eye ointment form it is used to treat the infections with Herpes simplex virus. This drug in the form of eye ointment works by inhibiting the reproduction and infection in more cells of the eye. Acyclovir eye ointment is converted into an active form in the infected cells of the eye infected with Herpes simplex virus. The active form of Aciclovir works by blocking the action of the enzyme DNA polymerase in the virus as a result of which the virus become unable to copy the genetic material from RNA to DNA. By this process viral multiplication is hampered. By this Aciclovir eye ointment is specially used to treat inflammation of the cornea (Keratitis) caused by the Herpes simplex virus.

Zovirax Eye Ointment is used to treat the Keratitis or the inflammation of the cornea due to the Herpes simplex virus. It is to be used in the topical form in the eye.
